The people of the Diocese of California are holding the people of Brazil in our prayers as the flooding disaster that devastated the Rio de Janeiro area has moved to affect the Santa Catarina area. The Diocese of California is in a Companion Diocese relationship with the Diocese of Curitiba, the Brazilian state of Parana. Most recently, the two companion dioceses hosted an Anglican Climate Justice gathering in the Dominican Republic during the U.N. Climate Change Summit in Cancun. During that important gathering we heard passionate witness regarding the devastating effect of climate change throughout the hemisphere, and the creative response of Anglican dioceses throughout the area to respond to the ensuing suffering.
Loving God, you are our companion in all things, helping us bring meaning out of events that throw us into chaos, mourning, and confusion. By your Holy Spirit comfort the people of Brazil as they continue to cope with devastating flooding. Help all of us who care for them to know how best to support the Anglican Episcopal Church in Brazil as it responds to the great need there. May we all commit ourselves to work towards climate justice, and end practices that make the poor ever more vulnerable to climate-related disasters. All this we ask in the name of Christ. Amen
